What is Streams?
It is the participants in a culture who give meaning to people, objects and events… It is by our use of things, and what we say, think and feel about them – how we represent them – that we give them meaning - Stuart Hall
Streams is an open space for reflection that aims to provide a supportive framework for developing critical and creative responses to art work.
Our meeting point will be 87 Gallery’s dedicated studio — a safe, invitational and professional platform where creative practitioners from all backgrounds or subject-specialisms get an opportunity to share works in progress, respond to exhibitions and events, meet others, and encourage new working relationships…
Who is it for?
Streams is for anyone over the age of 18, at any point on their creative journey . We welcome and support people with any level of experience and abilities. We aim to be inclusive, so if you have any access needs please contact us to ensure we can support you.
What to expect…
One Tuesday evening each month, representatives from 87 Gallery and The Critical Fish co-host a series of activities shaped around and encouraging critical response and creative thinking.
Each series will begin with an investigation into the current 87 Gallery exhibition, followed by two additional sessions which focus on you — giving you the opportunity to create and share your work.
These sessions will be largely shaped by you, and there is no rigid expectation on producing finished outcomes.
We aim to support people to gain confidence in producing and discussing their own work, however there is no pressure on an individual to speak unless they wish to.
Who are The Critical Fish?
The Critical Fish is a journal promoting research led writing about arts and visual culture centred on Hull and the region.
They are a forum for debate connecting organisations, artists, and audiences. They feature critical but accessible writing and support creativity and culture in the city and the surrounding area.
The Critical Fish’s team will bring specialised experience in education, the arts, and accessibility to Streams sessions.
