Street By Street - Online Residency
The last months have shown that there is more of a need to create new ways of connecting with people and places remotely. This is why this online residency project ‘Street By Street” deals as a catalyst for shaping new ways of exploring the surrounding through multidimensional voices and digital forms. Inspired by complex geometry, we will explore the architecture of the 1 mile radius around the gallery and transform it into digital art experiences.
The phenomenon of multidimensionality and impossible forms will inspire an ever growing digital sculpture in form of a face filter, influenced by participants , site specific structures and stories we hear by locals.
Over the next weeks, we will create a variety of sculptural filters, inspired by the streets around the gallery, inspired by your input. You can try these through the centred button on 87 Gallery site.
GEOMETRY & EXPLORATION
The first filter places you in front of the gallery space, without being physically there. The impossible form, which you see here, is Penrose Triangle, reflecting the virtual environment around you. Over the next weeks, we will create a variety of sculptural filters, inspired by the streets around the gallery, inspired by your input. Feel free to use the upcoming filters, tag gallery and tell us your stories and get in touch with us. We wish to connect to you, to the place and to others remotely.
An impossible figure is a three dimensional form which falls into the category of optical illusions. This object can easily exist in a 2 dimensional space, such as on paper or on the screen, however it is complex to translate it into a three dimensional space, in which our perspective and position in space is shifting. It is known to be used by artists and mathematicians such as MC. Escher Oscar Reutervärd.
REFLECTION & ILLUSION
This week we have been exploring the phenomenon of multidimensionality through the lens of reflection and illusion. We reacted to the submission by Caroline Bradbury from Hull and explored this surrounding through digital technology. Reflection and three dimensional spaces can be explored through glass, mirrors, water and many more surfaces. In her submission reflection can be seen in a beautiful puddle on Cottingham Road.
This theme is particularly inspired by Escher’s attempt to show multidimensionality. Besides his work on impossible shapes, we have been exploring the theme of reflection and illusion. ‘Hand with Reflecting Sphere’ is one of his famous works, which explores the complexity of a sphere drawn on a 2D space.
Reflection is physical phenomena such as diffuse and specular reflection and refraction. Here you can see a the AR form, in the context of a snippet of Hull’s streets.
INFINITY & DEPTH
The phenomenon which we are exploring is about infinity and depth. More to come.
