Lydia Shearsmith

The Immensity of Being

8th July 2023 - 16 September 2023

Launch 7th July | 6-8 PM (FREE)
87 Princes Avenue, Hull HU5 3QP

Lydia Shearsmith is an artist who is primarily concerned with exploring photography as a medium and as a subject matter.  Her varied processes allow her to expand image-making into physical space, challenging common definitions of photography.

We often overlook small details in the pace of life, forgetting that the ever-shifting elements of water, sky and light have firmer foundations than we do. It is not until we stop, take a breath, and observe their natural flows that we begin to consider the complexities of the world around us. In The Immensity of Being, Shearsmith magnifies and abstracts these movements and moments to encourage us to observe the rhythms of light in natural and urban environments.

Our presence alters the airflow in the space, initiating the movement of the suspended elements, which refract the visuals, transporting the projection around the room. We are invited to obstruct the projection, meaning the piece is never fully visible, altering and fragmenting the projected light.

"At 87 Gallery we're dedicated to supporting artists at pivotal points in their careers. Lydia is one of the most exciting emerging artists working in Hull and we're delighted to have been able to support her with this commission. I hope that visitors come to the gallery to enjoy a period of reflection and peace outside of their busy lives."
