“Adapted from my own experiences, this video piece is a brief and fragmented meditation on the different ways language can be taken out of its original context or usage, and how digital technology often leads us to lose our own sense of language.

Originally written in English, the piece was translated in to Japanese with narration provided by an American friend -a non-native Japanese speaker. This serves as the baseline for the piece and further emphasises the disconnect between language and self.”

“Mixed with birdsong and abstract visuals, it's my hope that the viewer may be able to consider their own use (and appreciation of) language, as well as the way we fit within both the digital and physical realms of communication, an effect I hope may change with each viewing, as different threads are more predominant each time.”

Gary Mitchell teaches filmmaking at the University of Hull, where he lives and works.

He primarily produces video, but also experiments with photography, exploring variant themes and modes of working.
