While we know that not all communication is art, it can be asserted that all art is communication. So what delineates the two?
How do we go from merely making a statement, to making a statement?
It is generally understood that art is linked to expression — the act of making one’s thoughts and feelings known. Too, there is an implication of worth. It’s something worth saying. It’s something worth making, worth owning, worth considering on a deeper level. Art is communication that is assigned value.
For the second issue of TIMES, we asked for submissions that explore communication, inviting entries investigating the utilisation of speech, symbols / visual languages, the written word, Postal / Delivery Services, social media, telecommunications, body language, sign language, code, and any other means by which we convey meaning or messages from one person to another.
In SEND < > RECEIVE, our contributors have approached the concept from various angles, exploring a range of facets including technology, history, grief, design, semiotics, translation, interpretation, community, nostalgia, and origins. The diversity of their art-forms, as well as their personal interpretations and explorations is a testament to the power and complexity of the subject.
